NMC demonstrated the applicability of advanced metalworking technologies for the production of the Joint-Unmanned Combat Air System (J-UCAS). Specifically, the advanced metalworking technologies worked to reduce the weight and cost of the J-UCAS Wing Outboard Fuselage with an estimated cost avoidance of $170M.

NMC will combine two costly steel sand castings into one steel investment casting, eliminating field failure and incurring an anticipated production cost savings of $8.1 million.


»Exothermic Welding for CVN

This project will thoroughly evaluate exothermic welding and insulation processes for splicing of Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) shipboard power cables on CVN 78 Class Carriers. Shipboard installation and repair procedures will be developed and approved for use.


»Optimization of Blasting Operations

This project will reduce shipbuilding costs by developing more efficient grit blasting parameters and by minimizing the amount of pipe wrapping necessary for blasting operations.
